From pop culture’s emerging obsession with the moon signs to lunar rituals showing up on mainstream television like The Affair, everyone seems to be talking about the moon. Even the Queen of TV herself, Oprah, is publishing articles about setting new moon intentions with the same authoritative and compelling tone as her magazine has touted hefty New York Times bestsellers and heart-opening interviews.
I’ve got to be honest with you—I saw this one coming. By this time last year, I’d noticed that my clients and subscribers were asking about the moon more than ever. And as I tapped into the incoming energy of 2018, the growing attraction to lunar culture was crystal clear. More than ever, people are wearing the moon on their bodies (temporarily and permanently!), scribbling down their new moon intentions and charging their quartz by the light of the full moon. Womxn are circling during pivotal phases of the moon, to do lunar rituals like the Witch Trials never happened.
Moon culture is everywhere.
So what’s up with this ever-growing lunar obsession? Two words: divine authenticity.
In astrology, the moon has long been associated with the feminine. It directs everything from the tides to the timing of menstruation to the ebb and flow of our emotions. As feminine energy has continued to rise in 2018 (think: the #MeToo movement, a record number of women and women-identifying people running for office, and female leads topping the box office), so has the appreciation and interest in the moon. And let’s be real—between endless wars overseas and abuses of power brought to light, 2018 has also brought us plenty of low points. We’re in the middle of a collective reckoning over how we’ve dismissed feminine energy and where that’s gotten us. We’re finally starting to understand just what it will take for us to change the systems that never really worked for all of us. Lunar rituals are a way to reclaim sacred power and unlock healing magic.
It’s time to honor the lunar gifts of rhythm, emotion, and intuition.
If 2018 has taught us anything, it’s that power for the sake of power only hurts us all in the long run, and that it’s time to tap into a different sort of power. As the rest of the year wanes, allow yourself to get reacquainted with this more subtle form of energy. Allow yourself to rest when the moon is dark, release when it’s full, and most importantly, live your life by your own internal wisdom.
Leverage the moon’s innate gifts to, as Oprah says, “turn your wounds into wisdom” so you’ll be ready to tackle 2019 with a truer version of you.
