While 2017 may feel like it’s quickly moving toward a denouement now that mid-summer has arrived, I hold a different opinion: it’s just getting started.
Having just experienced Lammas—the cross quarter day on August 2nd, which marks the official halfway point of summer (or winter for those in the southern hemisphere)—and with two eclipses this month, we still have a very long way to go.
Things are about to get spicy. I’m talking jalapeño-with-a-dash-of-cayenne tasty-hot!
I’ll have so much to say about all of this in the coming weeks, especially with Mercury, the planet that governs communication, stationing retrograde on the 12th, and the Great American Solar Eclipse in Leo on August 21st. But for now, I want to focus on the Lunar Eclipse in Aquarius on August 7th at 2:10 pm ET.
A lunar eclipse occurs on a full moon and generally marks an ending, or a climax when things come to culmination. During a lunar eclipse, the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon, cutting off the light of the Sun so it can not be reflected back to Earth by the Moon. Think of it like the electricity going out in your home during a power surge. For a moment everything gets disconnected.
Another analogy I like to use to explain the impact of a lunar eclipse is this: imagine you’re sitting in a room when the lights go out. Someone then comes into the room, stands you up, blindfolds you, and rearranges all of the furniture. Now try to find your seat… all while still wearing the blindfold with the lights out. Fun, right?
Eclipses are the wildcard in astrology.
They are potent harbingers of change, often lacking the clear understanding of how they will impact you in advance. Eclipses are known to bring startling news to the forefront of your life.
Aquarius, a sign ruled by Uranus (and traditionally Saturn, too) represents change. Progressive change. A time to loosen the reins of tradition and set sail in a new direction. A lunar eclipse holds the power of a full moon times three, meaning that a full moon eclipse highlights what is coming to fruition and what is needing to be released.
This particular lunar eclipse boasts some seriously positive aspects, including a trine to good-luck Jupiter (a very positive angle of manifestation) and a sextile to Saturn, the planet of discipline and structure. This lunar eclipse rides a groovy vibe.
On top of that, remember that this is a full moon. Full moons are a potent and powerful exclamation point in the Moon’s journey. Marking a climax of the position of the Moon and amplifying the gravitational pull here on Earth, full moons bring things to completion.
Look back to look forward
This particular eclipse belongs to Saros cycle 119. The last time we had a full moon eclipse at 15 degrees of Aquarius was 19 years ago, on August 7, 1998, meaning we need to look back 19 years to understand the pattern coming full circle in our lives now.
Eclipses are some of the most impactful times of the year to participate in lunar magic. It’s a time to concretely connect to the power of the cosmos to expedite the fruition of a goal, wish, or desire. Are you ready? It’s time to get witchy!
Here are six ways to activate the magic of the full moon lunar eclipse in Aquarius:
-
Honor your past.
Look back 19 years ago, and get clear on what chapter of your life is now coming full circle. Once you have a clear sense of this, consider doing something to honor it. Thank your journey, and release any attachment to the story that began in August of 1998. You may even want to burn something related to that period to free yourself energetically from karma at that time. For those of you still in your twenties, look at your early childhood years and see what pattern emerged then that is coming full circle now. And, if you are a teenager, consider what was going on in your Mom’s life then, that might be relevant to you now. 🙂
-
Cultivate unshakable self-respect.
Since this this a lunar eclipse in Aquarius, it’s essential to conjure a strong sense of self-respect. Connect to the core of your truth, and honor your journey up until now. Aquarius is a sign that represents nonconformity and rebellion. Now is the time to accept your truth with confidence.
-
Look for patterns.
Start to identify where you are holding yourself back. Go deeper: notice where you are holding yourself back because you feel like you need to conform to other people’s definition of success. Then make a conscious decision to move forward in the direction of your heart’s truest desire. When nightfall comes, go stand outside under the full moon and make a promise to the cosmos to move in the direction of your highest good and solicit divine support in the process.
-
Hold a sacred ceremony.
Build an altar, and consciously connect with the forces of magic. Honor the elements: earth, air, fire, and water. Honor the directions: north, south, east, and west. Call on your angels and guides, and speak your truth. Invite in auspicious magic.
-
Get grounded.
Put two feet on the ground, walk barefoot, hug a tree, and stay connected to planet Earth. Remember, connecting to nature is therapeutic and can help us feel a sense of stability in an otherwise turbulent world.
