As we move into the last days of 2019, the temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere have finally taken a tumble. We’ve been riding the rollercoaster of swinging temperatures throughout most of fall (at least where I am), but it seems like the start of winter has settled in to stay.
If you’re feeling the same sort of energy dip, you’re not alone.
I turned in my manuscript to my editor a few weeks ago (woohoo!) and ever since, my body’s been letting me know that it’s ready for the same sort of inward turn the outside world is taking. I’m craving solitude to think through all of the ideas I haven’t been able to pay attention to while I was creating my book, along with holistic health remedies for this season, including warm soups, spiced teas, and long soaks in the tub.
This longing for rest is all part of our natural rhythm, and it’s right in time with the arrival of the Winter Solstice.
On December 21st at 11:19 PM ET, the Sun moves into Capricorn, ushering in the Solstice. This is the darkest day of the year in the northern hemisphere (longest in the southern) and can feel jarring. However, it also marks the moment that the Sun begins his return, adding precious minutes of light onto our days. Or the opposite for those in the southern hemisphere.
The Solstice marks a turning point in the year. It’s a potent energetic moment and can serve as a portal to our innermost desires—if we’re willing to step into the darkness.
Take this moment to embrace the power of a winter solstice ritual.
One of my longtime favorites is to use fire to purify our thoughts and actions, and to let go of anything that no longer serves us. I like to create a small fire and burn sentiments that represent the cycle of completion.
Spend time diving deep into the lessons you’ve learned this year. Write whatever thoughts and emotions you have about where you’ve been and where you’re going until you feel “empty.” Thank it all for the lessons it gave you, then toss your paper into a (well-contained) fire. Let that shit go, love. There’s no need to carry it into the new decade.
I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to use this cosmic caress to address our greatest wounds. The Capricorn archetype is all about fulfilling our highest duties, but we can’t come close to reaching this potential until we take care of our roots.
With the sun in this tenacious sign throughout the rest of this year and beyond, tap into your inner strategist and dig in to do the work. Think deeper, not faster. Listen to the messages your body sends you as you sink into restorative yoga postures. Actively search for the dark spaces, love, and coax them back into the light.
Trust me, now’s the time to do this work. We’re about to launch headfirst into eclipse season. Saturn and Pluto will make a powerful conjunction in early January.
The next two weeks are going to rock your world, so make sure you take care of yourself now.
I’ll be back in your inbox on the 25th (Merry Christmas!) to give you a heads-up about the new moon/solar eclipse in Capricorn the following day. It’s a gorgeous opportunity to seed new beginnings and you do not want to miss it.
Until then: rest up, relax, and be sure to give yourself the space you need to thrive during the holiday hustle. The goal of the solstice is to settle into this turning point and let yourself review the year, and the decade, so that when the upcoming new moon solar eclipse perfects, you’re ready to roar.
All my. love,
Jenn
