New Moon in Pisces: Embrace Endings and New Beginnings

The new moon in Pisces is upon us, happening at 15 degrees of the fish at 11:03 am ET on March 6th, 2019. As the seasons converge and the seasons change, the last dregs of winter mix with what will soon become the first blush of spring (if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, that is). This sense of “in-betweenness” is the essence of Pisces season, when the magic of twilight and an unwavering trust in the Universe begs us to move forward.

Astrologically we are wrapping up the last sign of the zodiac, and forging forward into a fresh new beginning with the equinox (aka the astrological new year) right around the corner.

Leaning into the cycles and seasons of the universe helps to tap into the rhythm of success. And, right now, in the thick of Pisces season, we come to an ending—perhaps many—as we prepare for the fresh start that’s right around the corner.

To create something fresh and brand-new means taking a risk.

No amount of optimism or alignment eliminates the possibility of failure. It also means honoring endings, too.

On the heels of Mercury stationing retrograde, the sun and moon now meet at the same degree of Pisces. This opens a portal of potential. The cosmic curriculum requires us to slow down and feel into our becoming. It also means embracing a cycle of endings as we make way for the new beginnings afoot.

New Moon in Pisces: Beginnings Require Conclusions

So, as you eagerly move in the direction of what you most desire, honor what’s coming to a close now, too.

The new moon in Pisces also snuggles up right next to Neptune, Pisces’ ruler. Meaning this new moon drops us deep into our emotions. It asks us to feel, and feel big. Further, with Jupiter in Sagittarius squaring the sun, moon, Mercury, Neptune stellium in Pisces, this new moon invites us into our emotional body.

Given what’s happening astrologically, this might feel emotional—like, super emotional. I’ve said this before, and I’ll repeat it:

Pisces season needs firm boundaries.

And, the ability to say no. Often this means abstaining from substances that cloud judgment, or emotional patterns that hold us back—think codependency and abusive relationships. Setting boundaries is Pisces medicine. Thankfully, Saturn, the zodiac’s taskmaster, in steadfast Capricorn, pushes for firm boundaries and is in a perfect sextile to this new moon. PHEW!

Get Clear On What You Are Feeling

When the sun and moon merge—as they do with new moons—yin and yang (or masculine and feminine) energy overlap, creating a union between the two. This potent energy offers ripe conditions for creation. A new cycle commences. Consequently, things shift quickly. Yet, it’s common to feel a little blue around new moons as it’s a more introverted time. This is especially true with Mercury retrograde in Pisces. So, lean into discomfort and remember: it’s pushing you to grow.

Stay patient with dark and uncomfortable feelings.

Since Mercury, the planet of communication is also retrograde, your emotional body, and your intuition are talking loudly—so, please listen. Mercury stationed retrograde on March 5th, 2019 and will go direct on March 28th, 2019.

On top of all of this, Uranus—the planet of revolution, evolution, and change—leaves Aries and enters Taurus… for good! (Well, at least for the next seven years or so.)

This is a big, gigantic, massive deal, which I’ll be writing more about later.

So prepare yourself now, because karma rules this new moon and the weeks that follow. Now’s the time to initiate new beginnings by honoring endings, especially as Saturn makes a perfect angle to the sun and moon, supporting your new beginning.

Here are nine things you can do to celebrate the new moon in Pisces:

These practices will help you conjure your psychic intuition, freedom, art, sensitivity, music, poetry (all things the sign of the fish is known for).

1. Have a new moon ritual.

Before engaging any ritual, clean and organize your space. Straightening up and getting rid of clutter sets the tone for the ceremony. Once your area is established, conjure a connection to the Divine. Call upon a connection to the source energy you feel supports you the most: guides, angels, or any other divine connection. Journaling is powerful now, so write down the things in your life you either wish to call in or are ready to release. The next step is to read your desires out loud—the stuff you want to call into your life now. Speaking aloud about them plays a crucial role in bringing them to life. Now that you’ve let go and made space for what you truly desire, it’s time to meditate on it. Sit quietly, follow your breath, and visualize your desires coming to fruition. Check out this blog for detailed instructions on how to have your moon ritual.

2. Embrace creativity and listen to music.

If you follow me on Instagram, you know I am music obsessed, and for good reasons. We live in a moment where there is so much beautiful, fantastic music to listen to. If you need inspiration check out some of these recent releases. Adia Victoria‘s excellent new album, Solange’s incredible new album, the beautiful new single from The National. Or, you can go quintessential Pisces and listen to Ra Ra Riots song ‘Water’ (it’s so Pisces).

3. Take a salt water bath.

If you don’t have access to a sensory deprivation float tank, set yourself up to have a luscious bath with Epsom salts and essential oils, or even a soothing shower. If you’re fortunate enough to live in a place where the ocean is warm right now, go for a new moon dip! Nothing beats connecting with water when working with the moon, especially when it’s a new moon in Pisces.

4. Marie Kondo your home.

With the equinox around the corner, it’s essential to let go of that which doesn’t spark joy. Use the Mercury retrograde energy to your advantage and let go of what doesn’t feel joyful to you!

5. Forgive others (even if you don’t think they deserve it).

This new moon helps you to process your emotions and become crystalline clear on how you can better incorporate your intuition in your life and release any self-sabotaging behaviors that keep you locked in a victim mode. Facilitate your ability to heal, forgive and move on. On the highest level, this energy is all about the dissolution of ego and finding unity with the other.

6. Give yourself a luscious foot massage.

Pisces rules the feet, so take some time to connect with your soles (get it?). You can do this while you bathe, or this can be a perfect self-care routine post-bath. Use a small amount of castor oil and begin caressing your left foot gently. After your foot is sufficiently oiled, begin to massage more intensely. Get in between the bones on the top and bottom of your feet, around your heel and ankle, and down the inner and outer arch. Remember to pay attention to each toe, as well as the webbing between them. Once you feel fully connected to your left foot, move on and do the same for your right foot. After you complete both feet, put on a pair of warm socks and let the oil continue to soothe your soles.

7. Hang out with an animal.

Animal communication goes a long way today. If you don’t have a furbaby yourself, reach out to a friend who does. Offer to walk their dog or babysit their cat. Or if you have a furry friend of your own, be sure to give them extra attention and love today. If allergies keep you from loving on our feline and canine friends, watch a show with baby animals or even do a quick Google search for your favorite kind of animals online.

8. Prioritize Sleep.

If you’ve already bathed, meditated, massaged your feet, and snuggled with an animal, (or not!) then you might be ready to hit the hay. You’re right on schedule. New moons are a great time to tune into your sleep rhythm and honor your full eight hours, even more so with this Pisces emphasis. Set the mood. Anoint yourself with essential oils like lavender and bergamot for grounding and relaxation, then crawl into bed and enjoy your Piscean dreamscape. You’ll thank yourself tomorrow.

9. Check Your Addictions At The Door.

Pisces, a sign that knows few limits, invites us into an in-depth exploration of our subconscious and emotional worlds. It can also invite addictions, too. When Mercury stations direct on March 28th, he does so conjoined to Neptune. This conjunction brings with it incredible powers, and it requires sobriety. While I am a lover of all things food and wine, I embrace stone cold sobriety for large portions of the year, and I can’t tell you enough how wonderful it is. Since the new moon follows Fat Tuesday, (Mardi Gras), it’s a wonderful time to go dry. Now I’d love to hear from you! What are you releasing as the zodiac prepares to begin again? And what are you calling into being with this potent new moon in Pisces? Let me know in the comments!
